Heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR on Monday, triggering widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion and disruptions to flight operations, while the Gurugram administration advised offices to allow employees to work from home and schools to conduct classes online.
Several parts of Delhi witnessed significant water accumulation following the downpour. In Tughlakabad, around two feet of water collected at a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) park, while surrounding roads were also inundated. Najafgarh also reported extensive waterlogging.
Baba Kharak Singh Marg in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area was severely affected, with roads around Shivaji Stadium submerged and traffic movement disrupted. Similar conditions were reported at the Zakhira underpass.
Gurugram was among the worst-hit areas in the National Capital Region. The district administration said the city had received 70 mm of rainfall by 1.30 pm. Key stretches affected included Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road.
The administration issued advisories for offices to permit work from home and for schools to shift classes online after the rainfall strained the city’s civic infrastructure. Although the rain lasted for about an hour, several areas were flooded, renewing concerns among residents over the city’s drainage and civic systems during prolonged spells of rain.
Videos and photographs circulated on social media showing motorists abandoning stranded vehicles on flooded roads. Students returning from school were also seen moving towards elevated locations, including bus stops built on raised platforms, amid concerns over open manholes hidden under muddy floodwater.
Traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway was also severely affected. Commuters reported that the stretch between Signature Tower and Hero Honda Chowk, normally covered in about 15 minutes, took at least 50 minutes. A section of the expressway near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro station, was submerged. Sheetla Mata Road, another flood-prone stretch in Gurugram, was also badly affected.
Meanwhile, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall disrupted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. A total of 15 flights were diverted because of adverse weather conditions, including three international flights. Twelve flights were diverted to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow.
