Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday said he was looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi “very soon” as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on him in Moscow and conveyed the Indian Prime Minister’s greetings.
According to a statement issued by the Kremlin, Putin said Jaishankar’s visit reflected the depth of relations developed between Russia and India over several decades. He said the two countries continued to cooperate across a wide range of areas, including government-to-government ties, parliamentary relations and economic cooperation.
Putin noted that bilateral trade turnover had increased this year after declining slightly last year and credited Modi’s personal attention to strengthening India-Russia relations.
“I hope to see him soon, as we planned, within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, very soon. Our schedule is such that we will probably be able to meet again this year,” Putin said, while asking Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to Modi.
Putin also said Jaishankar and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, who heads the Russian side of the intergovernmental commission, had discussed several key issues.
He highlighted energy, fertiliser supplies, nuclear energy and cooperation in high-technology sectors as important areas on the bilateral agenda. Putin said Russia was increasing fertiliser supplies to India and was prepared to further expand them to support Indian agriculture.
Jaishankar said Modi was looking forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming SCO Summit and hoped the Russian President would visit India for the BRICS Summit. He described the relationship between the two countries as a “strong, robust bilateral partnership”.
“We had a meeting of the intergovernmental commission this morning. I have a very good report to share with you, concerning our economic cooperation, nuclear energy, fertilisers, and so on,” Jaishankar said, adding that economic cooperation between the two countries had grown significantly.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Manturov, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, India’s Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar and other officials attended the meeting.
Jaishankar is in Moscow to co-chair the 27th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC). His official August 23-24 visit is being held at the invitation of Manturov.
