India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant missed the final phase of play on Day 2 of the second Test against Sri Lanka after experiencing pain in his right shoulder, with Dhruv Jurel taking over the wicketkeeping duties at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Monday.
Jurel, who struck an unbeaten 115 to help India declare at 503/9, said Pant’s shoulder was being monitored by the team physiotherapist and expressed hope that the injury would not keep him out for long.
“He (Pant) got hurt on his right shoulder. Physio is monitoring him. Today, I kept wickets because he had pain in his right shoulder. Hopefully, he’ll be fine tomorrow,” Jurel said during the post-day press conference.
Pant had already sustained an injury on the opening day when a short delivery from Lahiru Kumara struck his left wrist during India’s innings. He received medical attention, had his wrist taped and retired hurt on three not out.
On Day 2, Pant was hit again, this time on his right shoulder, by a bouncer from Asitha Fernando during the 94th over. After receiving treatment and an ice pack, he resumed batting and went on to make a fluent 63 off 89 balls.
Pant did not take the field when India began bowling late in the day. Jurel, one of three wicketkeepers in India’s playing XI alongside KL Rahul, took the gloves as the visitors struck twice before stumps.
Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar dismissed Lahiru Udara and nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya respectively, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 8/2 after three overs and trailing India by 495 runs.
India’s imposing total was built around Jurel’s unbeaten century, while Pant contributed 63 before the visitors declared at 503/9.
