AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal will hold his second townhall in Goa on Tuesday to raise concerns over E20-blended petrol, with affected vehicle owners expected to share their experiences and voice opposition to the fuel policy.
The townhall will be held at 3 p.m. at Vivanta Banquet Hall in Miramar. Kejriwal said people from across Goa would participate and urged those affected by E20 petrol to bring their concerns to the event. He also invited people across the country to share their experiences through WhatsApp at 7669803441.
Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal claimed that E20 petrol was affecting vehicle engines and fuel systems while reducing mileage. He said the AAP had received thousands of WhatsApp messages and social media comments from people reporting problems after his earlier appeal for feedback.
Kejriwal also linked the ethanol-blending policy to rising sugar prices, claiming that around 25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane had been diverted from sugar production towards ethanol. According to him, sugar prices had risen from around ₹45 per kg on July 31 to more than ₹70 per kg.
He questioned the government’s assessment of the policy’s wider consequences, arguing that diverting sugarcane for ethanol had contributed to higher sugar prices.
Kejriwal further claimed that the expected foreign-exchange savings from reduced crude oil imports were being offset by imports of sugar and maize. He alleged that the policy was consequently imposing additional costs on consumers while also affecting vehicles.
Calling for collective action, Kejriwal said the government should reconsider the policy after assessing its impact on consumers, vehicle owners and commodity prices.
He urged people to participate in Tuesday’s townhall and said their concerns would be raised before the government. The AAP leader also appealed to citizens to send details of problems related to E20 petrol on the WhatsApp number +91 76698 03441.
