Punjab Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Monday laid the foundation stone for a new high-level steel bridge over the Sirhind Canal in Rupnagar, with the ₹16.38-crore project set to replace the decades-old structure connecting the city’s main market with other parts of the city.
The proposed bridge will be 111.24 metres long and is expected to improve traffic movement, provide safer and more convenient connectivity and give a boost to commercial activity in the Rupnagar market.
Speaking on the occasion, Harbhajan Singh ETO said providing better basic infrastructure to people remains a priority of the Punjab Government. He said the existing bridge, constructed in 1884-85, had served as a crucial link for generations but now required replacement with a modern structure.
The minister said the new bridge would strengthen Rupnagar’s urban infrastructure while easing movement for residents, traders and visitors to the main market. He added that the government was undertaking infrastructure projects across cities and villages to improve basic public facilities.
Rupnagar MLA Advocate Dinesh Chadha thanked the state government for taking up the long-pending demand. He said the ₹16.38-crore project would play an important role in the city’s future development.
“The new bridge will streamline traffic in the city and give a major boost to commercial activities,” Chadha said, describing the project as another significant milestone for Rupnagar.
Residents and members of the local business community welcomed the commencement of the construction work, expressing hope that the new bridge would improve transportation and strengthen commercial activity in the market.
