US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Chinese President Xi Jinping would visit the United States in two weeks, making the announcement while showcasing plans for a new White House ballroom and a military complex that he compared in ambition to China’s Great Hall.
Trump made the disclosure during a back-to-school event in the White House Rose Garden but did not provide specific dates, an itinerary or details of the expected talks. There was also no accompanying confirmation from the Chinese government in the material available.
“We have President Xi coming in two weeks,” Trump said, recalling his visit to China two months ago and his experience at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
“Well, now we’re going to have a Great Hall too in the United States,” he added.
Trump linked the planned ballroom to broader construction underway at the White House. He said the project would include a ballroom and a military component, describing the complex as a major addition to the presidential compound.
“You’ll see right alongside of it the great structure that’s rising right next to the White House, and that’s gonna be the ballroom/military complex,” he said.
Trump also highlighted construction of a new White House heliport, saying helicopters had previously been forced to land on grass, which he described as difficult and potentially dangerous during wet conditions.
“I love the sound of construction,” Trump said, praising workers involved in the projects and arguing that improvements were being carried out after years of delay.
The announcement of Xi’s expected visit comes as Washington and Beijing continue to manage tensions over trade, technology, Taiwan, the South China Sea and wider strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. The two governments have maintained high-level engagement aimed at managing differences and preventing further escalation.
Trump’s remarks also followed his May visit to China, where he met Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
The Great Hall of the People is China’s principal ceremonial and legislative building on the western side of Tiananmen Square and hosts major state functions, legislative meetings and receptions for foreign leaders.
The White House ballroom project has itself faced legal challenges. The US Supreme Court on August 21 temporarily allowed construction to continue while litigation over the project proceeds.
