Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday expressed condolences to the family of late international kabaddi player Gurjit Singh Toot and assured them of government support, Faridkot MLA Gurdit Singh Sekhon said.
Sekhon facilitated a meeting between Gurjit Singh Toot’s family members, including his wife and daughter, and Chief Minister Mann. During the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed grief over the untimely demise of the promising Punjab kabaddi player and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family.
According to Sekhon, Mann assured the family that a sports stadium would be constructed at Toot village in Firozpur in memory of Gurjit Singh Toot. He also assured that Gurjit’s wife would be provided a government job.
Sekhon said the proposed stadium would serve both as a tribute to the late sportsperson and as a facility to encourage young people to take up sports. He said Gurjit’s contribution to kabaddi would continue to be remembered through the initiative.
Recalling his association with Gurjit, Sekhon said he shared a close bond with the late player and described their relationship as one of affection and brotherhood. He said Gurjit had begun his sporting journey while staying with him and that his memories would remain close to his heart.
Sekhon said he considered it his responsibility to stand by Gurjit’s family and extend every possible assistance to them.
Beant Kaur Sekhon said the proposed stadium would preserve the memory of Gurjit while providing emerging sportspersons from the area with a platform to develop their talent.
She said sports could play an important role in keeping young people away from drugs and other social ills by channelising their energy in a positive direction.
She expressed hope that the stadium would become an important sporting facility for emerging players in the area and help young athletes bring recognition to their village and region at national and international levels.
