Tension prevailed in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area after a clash broke out between two groups during a procession held on Sunday night to bring a Ganesh idol into the locality, prompting authorities to deploy heavy police security.
Ganesh festival organisers alleged that eggs were thrown at the procession while the idol was being brought into the area. The alleged incident angered participants and led to an escalation between the groups.
Police subsequently deployed personnel in large numbers across Mazgaon and strengthened security arrangements to prevent any further disturbance and maintain law and order.
The incident occurred during preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Police have taken steps to contain the situation and prevent the clash from triggering further tension in the area.
Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane strongly condemned the alleged incident and questioned claims of communal harmony.
“In Mazgaon, during the rally that was being held on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, they have shown their true colours. This is why we call them ‘green snakes’; it was proved once again yesterday. Those who talk about Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb, brotherhood and communal harmony — where have they disappeared now? Where are they hiding? They should explain,” Rane said.
Rane also questioned whether Hindus should be able to celebrate their religious festivals without disruption, referring to the peaceful conduct of Eid celebrations.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam said throwing eggs at a religious procession would be the work of anti-social elements and said police were investigating buildings and towers in the area to identify those responsible.
“Whoever is found responsible will not be spared,” Kadam told IANS. He also appealed to people to respect the religious beliefs and sentiments of other communities.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC described the incident as unfortunate and said the government would take strong action against those responsible, irrespective of their identity or affiliations.
“We have always believed in unity and diversity,” she said, while stressing the importance of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence.
BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh also expressed hope that the authorities would take stringent action against those responsible for the alleged disruption.
Police presence has been increased across Mazgaon as authorities continue efforts to prevent any further disturbance.
