India adopted a “cautious approach” while finalising arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June, senior government officials said on Monday, citing concerns over Trump’s “unpredictable behaviour”.
The comments came in response to remarks by US Ambassador Sergio Gor at an event over the weekend that India had “specifically requested” that there be no joint media interaction following the Modi-Trump meeting.
Government officials familiar with the matter said discussions between delegations on arrangements for leaders’ public appearances are routine ahead of VVIP engagements.
“In this regard, the Indian side communicated its standard practice for such visits,” an official said, adding that delegations meeting the US President are mindful of his unpredictable behaviour, citing his interactions with the presidents of South Africa and Ukraine.
The official said this was the context in which India adopted a cautious approach to the public arrangements surrounding the meeting.
Modi and Trump met on June 18 in Evian on the margins of the G7 Summit. During the meeting, Modi appreciated Trump’s efforts towards an understanding aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in West Asia and restoring peace and stability in the wider region.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, besides ensuring the safety of seafarers.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reviewed substantial progress under the India-US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), launched following their meeting in Washington in February 2025.
They welcomed developments in defence, strategic technologies, energy and bilateral trade.
The leaders also noted “significant progress” in negotiations towards an interim Bilateral Trade Agreement and directed officials from both sides to work towards an agreement that would be balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful at the earliest.
Modi and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expanding cooperation across sectors for the mutual benefit of the two countries and their people.
