Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari of threatening to prevent her from leaving her home and urged the President and Chief Justice of India to take note of the remarks.
Banerjee reacted after Adhikari, during a news conference, reportedly said he would ensure that she could not return to the streets. His remarks came after Banerjee had said she would continue taking on the BJP government through public outreach and protests.
In a post on X, Banerjee described the alleged statement as a “new low” in Indian politics and questioned whether it amounted to intimidation, house arrest or political persecution.
“A sitting Chief Minister, sworn to uphold the Constitution, openly threatens to curtail the freedom of the Chairperson of the principal opposition party,” she said, referring to herself as the chairperson of the TMC.
Banerjee also questioned what authority anyone had to decide who could move freely in a constitutional democracy. She alleged that the remarks were part of an attempt to silence the Opposition.
“This is bigger than Mamata Banerjee. This is about the kind of India @BJP4India wants to create – where political opponents are threatened, dissent is punished, and constitutional rights become privileges granted by those in power,” she said.
Banerjee further accused the BJP government of creating what she called a “dangerous authoritarian moment” and said political power could intimidate people only temporarily before ultimately being answerable to the electorate.
The remarks have added to the escalating political confrontation between the BJP-led state government and the TMC leadership. Adhikari, who succeeded Banerjee as Chief Minister, has recently exchanged sharp attacks with his predecessor over public welfare schemes and her attempts to mobilise support through public meetings.
