At least six people were killed after a four-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district, with rescue teams continuing operations amid fears that several people remain trapped beneath the debris.
According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the building had developed a noticeable tilt late on July 30 before collapsing later that night. Repair work was reportedly underway at the structure, prompting several labourers to vacate the premises after noticing signs of danger, which is believed to have reduced the number of occupants at the time of the incident.
Rescue personnel recovered two bodies during the operation and also pulled out a woman alive from the rubble. She was shifted to a nearby hospital, where her condition is reported to be stable.
Survivor Deepak Kumar Yadav said the building collapsed shortly after residents had retired for the night. “We heard a loud sound and rushed out amid panic. I jumped from the first floor to save myself,” he said.
Neha Singh, who has been searching for her husband Ranjeet Singh, said he had gone downstairs minutes before the collapse and has remained missing since. “His phone is ringing, but there is no response,” she said.
Another survivor, Sangeeta Prajapati, said she was in the parking area when she heard the structure cracking. She attempted to flee but sustained injuries as the building came down.
Abhay Kumar Yadav said around 25 to 30 people were inside the 45-room building when it collapsed. Unable to find a safe exit, he jumped from the first floor, suffering a leg fracture. He added that local residents later used a ladder to help others escape.
Officials said three to four labourers are still feared trapped beneath the rubble. Teams from the NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), assisted by heavy machinery including JCB excavators, have been working through the night to clear debris.
Authorities said rescue efforts have been slowed by the massive volume of rubble and poor visibility, but operations will continue until all those trapped are located.
