India’s Guntas Kaur Sandhu made an impressive start to the Malaysia Ladies Amateur Open, carding a one-over 73 to finish tied for second after the opening round at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club in Selangor on Tuesday.
The 15-year-old Chandigarh golfer shares second place with three other players, just two strokes behind overnight leader Foong Zi Yu of Malaysia, who returned a one-under 71.
Panchkula’s Ceerat Kang, the other member of the two-player Indian contingent fielded by the Indian Golf Union (IGU), carded a two-over 74 to occupy sixth place after the first round of the prestigious tournament.
In the team standings, India ended the opening day in third place with a combined score of three-over 147.
Competing against a field of 54 golfers representing 11 countries, Guntas produced a steady round highlighted by birdies on the ninth, 11th and 16th holes. Her score was offset by bogeys on the 10th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes.
Reflecting on her performance, Guntas said she was pleased with the course conditions and hoped to carry the momentum into the remaining two rounds.
“The course is playing in pristine conditions, and I quite liked how it behaved today. I tried to utilise all my learnings on the IGU circuit here in Malaysia, and the outcome has been very positive. There are two rounds left, and I resolve to maintain my concentration and focus on the process,” she said.
Ceerat Kang entered the tournament as the top-ranked player in the IGU Ladies Order of Merit, while Guntas is ranked second following an impressive domestic season that included four titles on the IGU circuit.
The three-round tournament concludes on July 30, with the team championship to be decided after 36 holes.
