Pune Police have uncovered an alleged illegal network involved in the unauthorised sale of prescription injections reportedly used for bodybuilding and substance abuse, arresting five persons and seizing 50 vials of Mephentermine Sulphate Injection IP (MEPHIVAN).
According to the police, the operation was carried out around 11:20 p.m. on July 24 near Anand Darbar on Katraj-Dattanagar Road following specific intelligence inputs. During the investigation, officers found that the accused were allegedly selling the prescription drug without holding the mandatory drug licence or possessing the required medical and pharmaceutical qualifications.
The arrested accused have been identified as Atharva Indrajit Shinde (24), Avinash Shiva Balungi (22), Pradeep Jitendra Humbre (26), Piyush Ganesh Bharam (26), and Laxman Parmeshwar Mane (36).
Police said Mephentermine Sulphate Injection is a prescription medicine that should only be administered under the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner. Investigators alleged that the injections were being illegally marketed to individuals seeking enhanced physical performance, increased muscle mass or intoxication.
A criminal case has been registered against the accused under the relevant legal provisions. Investigators are now working to identify the source of the seized injections, trace the wider supply network and determine the intended buyers.
Police said the crackdown forms part of an ongoing effort to curb the illegal sale of restricted drugs, particularly those being misused within the growing fitness and bodybuilding community.
Medical experts have long warned that the misuse of performance-enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids, growth hormones and similar injectable substances, can lead to severe health complications. These may include high blood pressure, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, liver damage and other potentially life-threatening conditions. Authorities cautioned that non-prescription use often involves doses far exceeding medically approved levels, significantly increasing the associated health risks.
