India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 received another boost on Tuesday as Punjab weightlifter Harjinder Kaur clinched the silver medal in the women’s 69kg event with a composed and consistent performance.
Harjinder recorded a combined lift of 227kg, successfully lifting 101kg in the snatch before producing a best effort of 126kg in the clean and jerk to secure second place on the podium.
Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau claimed the gold medal with a total of 240kg, comprising a 108kg snatch and a 132kg clean and jerk. Australia’s Nya Phebe Hayman finished third with a combined lift of 218kg to take the bronze medal.
The Indian lifter remained firmly in contention throughout the competition and confirmed her silver medal with a successful final clean and jerk attempt of 126kg.
Harjinder’s success continued India’s strong showing in weightlifting, a discipline that has once again emerged as one of the country’s biggest medal contributors at the Glasgow Games. Her silver is India’s seventh medal in weightlifting so far, with the contingent having won one gold, five silver and one bronze.
Earlier, Mirabai Chanu captured India’s lone gold medal in the women’s 49kg category. Rishikanta Singh Chanambam, Raja Muthupandi, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Gyaneshwari Yadav and Harjinder Kaur have earned silver medals, while Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam secured the bronze.
Harjinder’s journey to international success has been marked by perseverance. Born on October 14, 1996, in Mehas village near Nabha in Punjab, she grew up in a financially challenged farming family. Before taking up weightlifting in 2016 at Punjabi University, Patiala, she played Kabaddi and spent years performing physically demanding farm work, including manually operating a chaff-cutting machine, which helped build the upper-body strength that later became her greatest asset on the weightlifting platform.
