The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday said the extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi from the United Kingdom will move forward once the ongoing legal proceedings in British courts are concluded.
Addressing the media during the weekly briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said judicial proceedings related to Nirav Modi’s case were still underway in the UK.
“As far as Nirav Modi is concerned, certain judicial proceedings are currently underway in the UK. Once those legal proceedings are concluded, the process of his extradition will move forward,” Jaiswal said.
He added that the Government of India was closely monitoring the case and reiterated its commitment to bringing fugitive economic offenders back to face trial in India.
“The Government of India’s position remains firm that all fugitive offenders should be brought back to India and made to face the judicial process here,” he said.
The latest remarks come months after the High Court of Justice, King’s Bench Division, in London rejected Nirav Modi’s petition in March seeking to reopen proceedings challenging his extradition to India.
The application had relied on a UK High Court judgment in the case involving defence consultant Sanjay Bhandari. During the hearing, the Crown Prosecution Service argued the case with assistance from a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team, including investigating officers who travelled to London.
Nirav Modi is wanted in India in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case involving the alleged fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertaking to secure overseas loans.
He left India in January 2018, shortly before the CBI registered its case into the alleged banking fraud. After his arrest in the UK in 2019, British courts approved his extradition to India, accepting assurances regarding his treatment in Indian prisons and rejecting his earlier legal challenges.
