Nepal Police have arrested two men accused of stealing gold earrings from the body of a woman who was swept into the Narayani River during devastating floods in the country, following the circulation of a video of the incident on social media.
The suspects were identified through an examination of the viral footage, which triggered widespread public outrage. The video showed two men pulling the woman’s body out of the river and allegedly removing earrings from both her ears.
According to the District Police Office, Chitwan, the accused — 25-year-old Madan Bhujel and 38-year-old Umesh Chaudhary — were arrested on Thursday near Pokhara Bus Park in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, southern Chitwan. Both men were temporarily residing in Bharatpur.
Chitwan Police official Suraj Budha confirmed the arrests. Police also released footage of the alleged incident and subsequently informed the public that the two suspects had been taken into custody.
In the video circulating on social media, the two men appear to use wooden planks and the woman’s hair to pull her body from the water. They then appear to remove earrings from both ears and place them aside. Several people are visible at the scene, with some recording the incident on their mobile phones.
Police said their investigation established that the woman’s body had been carried into the Narayani River after being swept away by floods that caused extensive devastation in parts of Nepal.
The Chitwan Police described the alleged act as inhuman, particularly as the country continues to deal with the impact of the disaster and a large-scale search-and-rescue operation.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 478 people had been confirmed dead in the disaster by Friday noon, while 977 people remained out of contact.
Meanwhile, authorities issued a fresh flood warning on Friday after receiving a report of a lake outburst in the Tibetan region of China, raising concerns that it could trigger further flooding in Nepal.
