The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 616 on Saturday morning, while hundreds of people remained missing as search and rescue operations continued across several affected districts, local media reported.
According to The Kathmandu Post, police had recovered 233 bodies in Chitwan, 158 in Nawalparasi East, 48 in Gorkha, 47 in Nawalparasi West, 45 in Dhading, 41 in Nuwakot, 31 in Tanahun and 13 in Rasuwa as of 6 a.m. Saturday.
Police teams are coordinating with local residents and other agencies to locate missing people and rescue those stranded in flood-affected areas. Survivors are being moved from high-risk locations to safer areas, while teams are clearing roads blocked by flood debris and landslides to restore connectivity and facilitate relief operations.
The flash flood that struck Rasuwa on Wednesday originated in the Tibetan region of China and swept through the transboundary Bhote Koshi River, causing extensive destruction. Bodies have been recovered from riverbanks in downstream districts along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun and Nawalparasi East and West.
Officials have warned that the death toll could rise further as search operations continue.
The Nepal government has also agreed to accept limited assistance from international search and rescue teams. The decision came after the administration initially declined foreign assistance, saying domestic rescuers were capable of managing the operation.
According to the latest Nepal Tourism Board records, Indian nationals account for the largest number of people reported missing in the disaster.
India has stepped up its relief assistance. A third flight carrying 10 tonnes of humanitarian supplies and an 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team reached Nepal on Friday. The consignment included portable generators, dignity kits, food packets and water purification tablets.
India had also handed over 37.5 tonnes of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief material, medicines and food packets to Nepal on Thursday to support ongoing relief and rescue operations.
