NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr Ashok K. Lahiri visited the Siachen Glacier Base Camp along with his team and undertook an aerial reconnaissance of the Northern Glacier, the government think tank said on Saturday.
According to NITI Aayog, Lahiri was briefed by the Commander of the Siachen Brigade on the operational environment and conditions in the region. During the visit, he also visited the Rockcraft Training School and paid homage at the Siachen War Memorial.
The think tank said the visit highlighted the challenging terrain and extreme conditions in which Indian Army personnel continue to guard the country’s frontiers.
Lahiri subsequently visited the Headquarters of the Fire and Fury Corps, where Lt Gen Madanraj Pande, General Officer Commanding of the formation, briefed him on operational and developmental aspects of Ladakh.
The briefing covered areas including modernisation, logistics, infrastructure, connectivity and social outreach.
Located in the eastern Karakoram range of the Himalayas, the Siachen Glacier lies northeast of NJ9842, where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan terminates. At an altitude of about 5,753 metres, it is widely described as the world’s highest active battlefield.
The glacier is the longest in the Karakoram and among the longest in the world’s non-polar regions. India has maintained control over the Siachen Glacier and the major passes in the area since 1984.
The region has remained strategically significant because of its location along the India-Pakistan-China frontier. Pakistan maintains positions on the western side of the Saltoro Ridge.
India established control over the glacier through Operation Meghdoot, launched by the Indian Armed Forces in 1984 to secure the strategically important Siachen region ahead of Pakistan’s planned operation in the area.
