Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) chief Chirag Paswan on Friday said student platforms should remain focused on addressing students’ concerns and should not be used for political purposes, amid youth-led protests in several parts of the country.
Paswan was responding to questions about Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ events and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav’s interaction with students protesting over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations in the state.
“‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ is alright but my only concern is that the students’ platform should not be used for political purposes. If you genuinely want to become the voice of students, you should take up their issues and work towards finding solutions. Merely creating a ruckus is not enough,” Paswan told IANS.
Referring to Tejashwi Yadav’s meeting with protesting students, Paswan said he welcomed the Opposition leader’s decision to meet them but argued that their demands should subsequently have been taken up with the Chief Minister.
“I was very pleased to see that. That is the beauty of democracy. When the ruling party and the opposition come together and raise their voices, we can work towards finding a positive solution,” he said.
However, Paswan alleged that Yadav only interacted with the students and took photographs without subsequently communicating their demands to the Chief Minister.
“I did that. I went to meet the students, then directly went to meet the Chief Minister at his residence, only to find a solution. Today the things have been resolved to an extent,” he said.
Paswan also expressed grief over the deaths caused by flash floods in Nepal, saying the tragedy was particularly painful as it occurred around Raksha Bandhan.
“Today, while I am extending wishes to my sisters here, my thoughts are with all those sisters who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. Brothers have lost sisters, sisters have lost brothers, and families have been torn apart,” he said.
He said India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, was making efforts to provide assistance to Nepal and noted that a helpline had been established for Indians reported missing in the disaster.
“I pray that normalcy is restored soon in Nepal,” Paswan said.
