Senior BJP leader and senior advocate HS Phoolka has called for a boycott of three Bharatiya Janata Party Members of Parliament who visited the residence of late Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences to his family following his death while serving a life sentence in a 1984 anti-Sikh violence case.
Phoolka, who has remained at the forefront of the legal battle for justice for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, strongly condemned the condolence visit by BJP MPs Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Yogender Chandolia.
In a post on X, Phoolka said, “Strongly condemn visit of 3 MP’s Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Yogender Chandolia to mass murderer Sajjan Kumar’s residence to offer condolences on his death.”
Pointing to the BJP’s support for the legal battle against Kumar, Phoolka added, “This when #BJP has always supported our quest for justice against this culprits and supported us in ensuring that he stays in Jail.”
“Sympathy should be reserved for victims and their families-many of whom live the horror of those days even till now. I call for the boycott of these 3 MP’s,” he said.
Phoolka’s criticism assumes significance as he himself recently joined the BJP after having spent decades pursuing cases relating to the killings of Sikhs in Delhi in November 1984.
A prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Phoolka represented victims of the 1984 violence in their prolonged legal battle for justice. He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in 2017 and subsequently served as Leader of the Opposition.
He resigned from the Punjab Assembly in 2018. Phoolka was conferred the Padma Shri in 2019.
He is also the co-author, along with journalist and author Manoj Mitta, of the book When a Tree Shook Delhi: The 1984 Carnage and Its Aftermath, which examines the November 1984 anti-Sikh violence and the subsequent struggle for accountability.
