The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has written to BJP national president Nitin Nabin seeking strict action against three party MPs who allegedly visited the residence of former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to offer condolences.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka and general secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon strongly criticised the MPs’ visit, saying Sajjan Kumar was convicted in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and that the visit had hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community.
Kalka and Kahlon said the committee had earlier also condemned Congress leader Deepender Hooda’s reported description of Sajjan Kumar as a role model. They said the same standard should apply when BJP leaders visit his residence.
The DSGMC leaders recalled the support they said senior BJP leaders, including the late Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, had extended to the Sikh community in its pursuit of justice in the 1984 cases. They also referred to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s participation in an event linked to the “Wall of Truth” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with 1984 riot victim Jagdish Kaur.
They further credited the Narendra Modi government with reopening several closed cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence, including cases involving Jagdish Tytler.
Kalka and Kahlon said the visit by the three MPs had caused further hurt to the Sikh community and therefore urged Nitin Nabin to take strict disciplinary action against them.
The DSGMC leaders also criticised Shiromani Akali Dal leaders Manjit Singh GK and Paramjit Singh Sarna for questioning the committee instead of condemning the BJP MPs. They asked the two leaders to explain their position on the issue and accused them of remaining silent because of the Akali leadership’s alleged desire for an alliance with the BJP.
Kalka and Kahlon also alleged that Sukhbir Singh Badal, whom they said GK and Sarna had previously accused of sacrilege-related issues and of being responsible for the disappearance of 328 copies of the Guru Granth Sahib, had not publicly broken his silence on the matter.
They questioned why GK and Sarna were not criticising the BJP MPs and alleged that sections of the Akali leadership were seeking an alliance with the BJP despite differences within the party over compromising on its principles.
