The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday that 320 Indian nationals remained uncontactable following the devastating floods in Nepal, while around 400 Indians stranded on the Chinese side were safe and in touch with their families.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a bi-weekly media briefing that 84 Indian nationals had been rescued so far. The figure includes 63 Indians working at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project, who were rescued from the flood-affected area.
Jaiswal also said 21 Indian nationals from Tamil Nadu, who had reached Kathmandu from the affected region on Thursday, arrived in Delhi on Friday by an IndiGo flight. India’s Ambassador in Kathmandu had met the group after their arrival in the Nepalese capital and enquired about their well-being.
Another 96 Indian nationals who had been stranded on the Chinese side have safely crossed into Nepal by land, the MEA said. Efforts are now underway to facilitate their evacuation, with further details to be shared once available.
Jaiswal cautioned that the number of uncontactable people could change as authorities reconcile multiple lists and receive fresh information. He said around 100 people of Indian origin who hold other nationalities also remained uncontactable. Some of them may have travelled for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
The MEA control room in New Delhi, along with the Indian missions in Kathmandu and Beijing, is operating round the clock to assist those affected.
On the Chinese side, Jaiswal said around 400 Indian nationals were safe and able to contact their families because communication services remained functional. The Indian Embassy in China is coordinating with local authorities, as well as team leaders and travel agents, to work out their evacuation.
The floods in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi region have caused extensive destruction along the riverbanks, damaging settlements, roads, hydropower projects and transmission infrastructure. The disaster is believed to have been triggered by an avalanche on a transboundary river between Nepal and China upstream of the Bhote Koshi River.
According to the latest update issued by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority on Friday, the death toll had risen to 538, while hundreds of people remained missing.
