A total of 149 Indian nationals stranded amid the devastating floods in Nepal have safely crossed over into Nepal from China, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
The ministry also released the names of all 149 Indians who crossed into Nepal safely.
According to the MEA, around 400 Indian nationals are currently safe in China. The Indian Embassy is in contact with them and working to facilitate their evacuation.
However, approximately 320 Indian nationals remain missing or cannot currently be contacted, the ministry said.
The latest update comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of devastating floods that have disrupted connectivity and rescue operations in several areas, particularly near the China border.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said that 579 bodies had been recovered after being swept away by the floods, while 1,924 people remained out of contact as of Friday evening.
Meanwhile, Nepal has waived the trekking fee for foreign nationals returning from the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage through the western Hilsa border point in Humla district for one week.
The Department of Immigration said the waiver applies to foreign pilgrims who had earlier obtained departure permits from the Immigration Office in Rasuwa. The measure came into effect on August 27 in view of the prevailing adverse conditions and the need to prioritise humanitarian safety.
Travellers using the Hilsa route normally have to pay a trekking fee of $50 per person per week because the route passes through a restricted area.
The measures are intended to facilitate the safe return of pilgrims through alternative routes after floods in the Bhote Koshi River damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure along the Rasuwa-Timure route leading to the Nepal-China border.
