Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has mourned the death of veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, remembering her as a mother figure and an “irreplaceable acting artist of South Indian cinema”.
Haasan paid tribute to the actress in a detailed post on X on Friday, recalling his long association with her and their work together across several films.
“From the film ‘Looking at it would quench hunger’ to spanning four decades, we have worked together in many films. She was the mother, I the child,” Haasan wrote.
Describing Janaki as an irreplaceable talent, he added that she had acted with several leading heroes of her era and was a preferred choice of his mentor, filmmaker K. Balachander.
“She has passed away. A maternal image has departed. I bid her farewell with tears,” Haasan said.
Janaki died on Friday at the age of 94. She had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chennai after developing age-related health complications.
Several other members of the film fraternity also expressed grief over her death. Actor Jr NTR remembered Janaki for leaving a distinctive mark on Telugu and Indian cinema, saying her cinematic journey and memorable characters would remain in people’s memories.
Actor Vishnu Manchu described her as a legendary figure whose grace, dignity and body of work would continue to inspire generations. He also urged younger audiences to learn about her contribution to cinema.
Director and choreographer Prabhu Deva also mourned the veteran actress.
Janaki, who was born in 1931, began her acting career in the 1940s and went on to establish herself as a prominent performer in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema. She appeared in more than 300 films and worked with leading actors and filmmakers across the South Indian film industry.
She is survived by her husband, three children and four grandchildren.
