Television actress Shweta Tiwari has spoken out against online abuse directed at women, alleging that some people who sent her derogatory messages identified themselves as supporters of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
In a series of Instagram Stories, the Kasautii Zindagii Kay actress described the use of abusive language against women on social media as both “deeply concerning” and increasingly common. She questioned how educated men from respectable families could use degrading language against women despite having mothers, wives, daughters and sisters in their own families.
Tiwari said one of the people who allegedly abused her was a Raj Thackeray or MNS supporter. She then linked the incident to her longstanding association with Maharashtra, saying she had lived in the state all her life and had grown up believing that Marathi culture respected women’s dignity and strength.
The actress questioned whether such behaviour represented the values associated with being a “Marathi maanus” and directly asked Raj Thackeray whether he considered such conduct acceptable if the people involved were indeed his supporters.
Tiwari stressed that disagreement or dislike did not justify abusive behaviour towards women and called for respect for women irrespective of personal affiliations or differences.
The actress recently also drew attention on social media after claiming that a cockroach was delivered along with a Red Bull ordered through Instamart. She shared videos of the insect and sought the attention of Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.
Tiwari is currently appearing in the second season of the reality series The Traitors on Prime Video.
