Congress leaders on Friday backed Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s sit-in outside Delhi’s Parliament Street Police Station, insisting that the protest would continue until police register a fresh FIR sought by a student who allegedly suffered pellet-gun injuries during a July 20 protest.
Rahul Gandhi, who was later joined by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged the sit-in outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, alleging that police had refused to register a complaint by Sahil Lochab, whom the Congress claims was injured by pellet-gun firing during students’ protests demanding education reforms at Jantar Mantar.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said Lochab’s lawyer had specifically sought registration of an FIR concerning the alleged use of pellet guns during police action.
“This is not some general FIR but rather a strictly defined one, concerning the illegal manner in which police action took place (against Sahil), where pellet guns were used,” Ramesh told reporters.
He acknowledged that a general FIR had already been registered concerning complaints arising from the July 20 Parliament march, but maintained that Lochab was seeking a separate FIR.
“Until an FIR is registered, and a new FIR registration number is given, we will not leave from here,” Ramesh said, adding that the Congress had not received any communication that its demand had been accepted.
Congress MP Kishori Lal Sharma described the issue as a matter of a citizen’s right to seek legal remedy. He questioned why an investigation could proceed without registration of an FIR and alleged that the government was apprehensive about the truth emerging over the alleged pellet-gun firing.
Congress leader Mukul Wasnik said the party’s agitation would continue until the government disclosed who ordered the alleged firing on students.
In Uttar Pradesh, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said Rahul Gandhi had gone to the police station to “secure the right of a victim”, arguing that every victim has the right to seek registration of an FIR. He also accused the Centre of shielding those responsible.
In Rajasthan, Congress leader Sachin Pilot said Gandhi was making efforts to secure justice for the youths allegedly injured by pellet guns, asserting that everyone has the right to seek legal redress.
