Chandigarh, August 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) leaders Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad and Tajinder Singh Pannu on Friday thanked the people of Punjab for their support during the bandh called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha with the backing of various Panthic organisations.
In a joint statement, Peer Mohammad, Chief Spokesperson and Senior Vice President of the party, and Pannu, its Media In-charge, said the bandh received widespread support across Punjab. They particularly thanked shopkeepers, traders, business owners, students, employees and the public for participating in what they described as a peaceful and successful bandh.
They said that, following directions from Giani Harpreet Singh, President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit) and former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the party’s district presidents, office-bearers and workers extended full support to the bandh.
According to the leaders, shops and businesses remained closed in major cities across the Majha, Malwa and Doaba regions, as well as in towns and villages. The bandh continued peacefully until 2 pm, they said.
They added that representatives of Panthic organisations made arrangements to minimise inconvenience to the public. Special passages were kept open for patients, ambulances and students travelling to schools, colleges and universities for examinations. The leaders, however, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to citizens during the bandh.
Peer Mohammad and Pannu said the bandh received support from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Nihang Singh organisations, Damdami Taksal, All India Sikh Students’ Federations, farmers’ organisations and different factions of the Shiromani Akali Dal, among others.
They said one of the key demands behind the bandh was the release of Bandi Singhs. They urged the Centre and state governments to immediately release all Bandi Singhs who have completed their sentences under Indian law.
The two leaders called upon Punjabis to maintain the same unity and solidarity in future to safeguard what they described as the rights and interests of Punjab.
The statement was issued to the press by Tajinder Singh Pannu, Media In-charge.
