IT services major Cognizant has notified customers about a cyber breach that occurred on April 21, 2026, warning that personal information may have been exposed, while saying there is currently no evidence that the data has been misused.
In notifications sent to affected individuals, the US-headquartered company said it was informing them as a precaution despite having no reason to believe their information had been improperly used.
“While we have no reason to believe that your information was misused, we thought it prudent to make this notification,” Cognizant said, while expressing regret over the incident and any inconvenience caused.
According to multiple reports, a cybercrime group identified as CoinbaseCartel has claimed responsibility for the breach. The reported exposure includes Social Security numbers and other personal information. Cognizant has not disclosed how many individuals may have been affected.
The company has advised affected customers that they can file a police report or place a security freeze on their credit reports without charge. A security freeze restricts credit-reporting agencies from releasing information from a consumer’s credit report without written authorisation.
Cognizant is also providing affected individuals with identity-theft protection through IDX, a data-breach response and recovery services provider. The package includes 24 months of credit and CyberScan monitoring, identity-theft recovery assistance and an insurance reimbursement policy of up to $1 million.
“With this protection, IDX will help you resolve issues if your identity is compromised,” the company said.
The disclosure comes amid increased scrutiny of cybersecurity practices across India’s IT services sector. In recent weeks, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), HCLTech and Hexaware have denied reports concerning alleged employee data leaks at their organisations.
