A mattress store in Kolkata’s Posta area was robbed of Rs 1.30 crore at gunpoint, triggering a police investigation into the incident, officials said on Thursday.
The robbery took place on Cotton Street on Wednesday night, following which senior police officers and detectives from Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, reached the spot.
According to police, four masked men entered the store and allegedly held firearms to the heads of the owner and employees before taking away cash that had been kept in a chest. The robbers reportedly packed the money into a bag and fled after threatening the store owner and employees against raising an alarm.
The employees, however, alerted local residents after the suspects fled. Several people chased the robbers and managed to catch one of them, but his associates reportedly freed him before all four escaped.
The store owner told police that the suspects had allegedly conducted a recce of the premises during the afternoon before returning at night to carry out the robbery.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify and trace the suspects. The owner and employees of the store are also being questioned as part of the investigation.
A senior Kolkata Police official said investigators were examining the possibility of insider involvement, given the suspects’ apparent knowledge that a large amount of cash would be available at the store.
“Search is on for the robbers. Preliminary investigation reveals that someone close to the store could be behind this, as the robbers knew that cash would come to the store. Store employees are being questioned. Investigation is on,” the official said.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the identities of the suspects and determine how they obtained information about the cash kept at the store.
