Houthis claim drone attacks on airport, oil facility in Saudi Arabia

Sanaa, August 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Yemen’s Houthi group on Thursday claimed responsibility for two drone attacks targeting an airport and an oil facility in Saudi Arabia’s southern Najran region, amid escalating tensions in the region.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a post on X that the group launched two drone strikes, one targeting what he described as a “sensitive target” at Najran airport and the other targeting a facility belonging to Saudi state oil company Aramco.

Saree claimed that both attacks “achieved their objectives” but did not provide details about possible casualties or damage.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the Houthis said the strikes were carried out in response to what they described as Saudi drone incursions into the airspace over Saada province in northern Yemen, a Houthi stronghold bordering Saudi Arabia.

There was no immediate response from Saudi authorities or Aramco to the Houthi claims.

The latest claims come as tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia continue to rise. Yemeni government forces, meanwhile, said they had conducted 81 military operations against Houthi positions during the previous 24 hours.

Government forces spokesperson Majid al-Nuzaili said the operations targeted Houthi fighters and positions along several frontlines, killing or injuring a number of militants, including field commanders.

Al-Nuzaili said the operations were conducted in response to what the government described as repeated Houthi attacks on government forces and civilian infrastructure. The Houthis have not commented on the claims.

On July 20, the Houthis announced a maritime ban on Saudi shipping, citing what they called a Saudi blockade of areas under Houthi control. Since then, the group has claimed attacks on Saudi tankers, energy facilities and airports, along with intensified missile and drone attacks against government-held areas in Yemen.

Yemen has remained embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa. Saudi Arabia subsequently led a coalition that intervened militarily in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
