The Misal Satluj Party on Friday extended its support to the Punjab bandh call given by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha over the demand for the release of Bandi Singhs and organised a peaceful protest rally in Patiala.
The rally was led by Manjit Singh Chahal, the party’s candidate from the Patiala Rural Assembly constituency. Addressing the gathering, Chahal demanded that Bandi Singhs be recognised as political prisoners and those legally eligible for release be freed without further delay.
Chahal said the issue of Bandi Singhs was not confined to any particular community or organisation but concerned human rights, justice and the rule of law. He maintained that keeping prisoners behind bars even after they have completed their sentences was inconsistent with the basic principles of justice.
He appealed to the Punjab and Central governments to consider the cases of Bandi Singhs with a humanitarian and compassionate approach and release those who are legally entitled to freedom. He also called for a clear and just policy for individuals who have remained incarcerated for prolonged periods.
Chahal said the Misal Satluj Party would continue to raise issues concerning justice and the legitimate concerns of Punjab’s people through democratic and peaceful means. He said the Patiala rally was aimed at conveying the public’s concerns to the governments rather than creating confrontation.
He also appealed to Punjabis to maintain peace, communal harmony and brotherhood while raising their legitimate demands through democratic means.
The Misal Satluj Party reiterated its full support for the campaign seeking the release of Bandi Singhs and said the issue would continue to be raised on democratic platforms until a just resolution is reached.
