The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said political clearance was denied for Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s proposed visit to the United States because the programme submitted for the trip was not considered appropriate to the office he holds or the purpose of the visit.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made the clarification during the ministry’s bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, while confirming that clearance had been granted for Reddy’s visit to the United Kingdom.
“Let me say that the visits of Chief Ministers, as indeed those of other dignitaries, are assessed by the Ministry of External Affairs in order to accord political clearance. The programme proposed in such cases should be appropriate to the office held and the purpose of the visit. In this particular case, that was not so with respect to the United States. Therefore, the clearance was denied and not given,” Jaiswal said.
The Telangana Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) had earlier confirmed that Reddy’s US leg was cancelled after the Centre declined permission on political grounds.
According to the CMO, the delegation was scheduled to travel to both the UK and the US, and the state government had sought the required clearances in accordance with established procedures. While permission was initially granted for the UK visit, the state was subsequently informed, after the delegation had reached the UK, that clearance for the US visit would not be granted.
Reddy consequently decided to return to Hyderabad from London instead of travelling to Boston.
The CMO said the Chief Minister expressed disappointment over the decision, maintaining that the proposed visit was aimed at attracting leading educational institutions to Telangana and promoting development and opportunities for students.
Reddy said the trip was intended to explore partnerships with globally reputed educational institutions as part of the objectives of the National Education Policy and provide young people in Telangana access to high-quality education, skills and training.
“I have always believed that when it comes to nation-building and the future of our youth, everyone should think beyond politics and elections,” Reddy said, according to the CMO.
