Gujarat Resident Doctor Allegedly Slapped, Abused by Senior Colleague at Rajkot Civil Hospital; Minister Assures Action

Rajkot, August 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A 26-year-old woman resident doctor at Rajkot’s Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (PDU) Civil Hospital was allegedly slapped, abused and threatened by a male colleague following a disagreement over the admission of a critically ill patient, prompting a protest by junior doctors.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening in the hospital’s emergency ward while the doctor, identified as Krisha Singhala, was on a 24-hour duty. Singhala, a first-year resident in the medicine department who has been working at the hospital for around six months, alleged in her complaint that the confrontation followed a dispute over the admission of an elderly patient brought to the hospital in critical condition at around 7.30 p.m.

The incident triggered anger among resident doctors, who staged a late-night protest at the hospital. The protest was called off after a complaint was registered against Ashwin Ramani at Pradyumnanagar Police Station, following which the doctors resumed their duties.

Police detained Ramani on Friday in connection with the complaint as the investigation progressed.

Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said the state government had taken the allegations seriously and assured the doctor of prompt justice and security.

“The state government has taken the incident of misbehaviour with a woman doctor at Rajkot Civil Hospital extremely seriously. I spoke to the victim woman doctor over the telephone and assured her of prompt justice and complete security by the evening,” Pansheriya said.

He said the government would not compromise on the dignity and respect of women employees and doctors and promised strict action against anyone found guilty.

“There will be no compromise whatsoever on the dignity and respect of women employees and doctors. In cases of such misbehaviour, the strictest possible action will be taken against the person found guilty,” he said.

The incident comes amid wider scrutiny of workplace conduct and the treatment of resident doctors at government hospitals in Gujarat. Earlier this month, allegations of ragging and harassment involving senior doctors at Surat Civil Hospital came under police investigation following the death of resident doctor Harsh Pandya.

In the Rajkot case, the police investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and determine responsibility.
