The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has welcomed the prompt intervention of Madhya Pradesh Police after two Kashmiri students in Bhopal alleged harassment, intimidation and pressure to vacate their rented accommodation.
According to the JKSA, the two students, who are pursuing pharmacy courses under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme, approached the association after allegedly facing threats and pressure from some individuals in their locality.
The students alleged that objections were raised to their presence in the area because they belonged to Jammu and Kashmir and were Muslims. They also alleged that certain individuals pressured their landlord to evict them and threatened them with forcible eviction if they did not leave.
JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami took up the matter with Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police Kailash Makwana. Khuehami said the DGP directed Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar to ensure the safety of the students.
A police team, including Nishatpura police station Station House Officer Manoj Patwa, subsequently visited the students at their residence and heard their concerns, the association said.
The police also questioned individuals allegedly involved in threatening or pressuring the students and summoned them to the police station for further inquiry, according to the JKSA. Residents of the housing society were also cautioned against any conduct that could make the students feel threatened or insecure.
Khuehami welcomed the police response, saying the immediate intervention had helped restore the students’ confidence and demonstrated that the rule of law would prevail over intimidation and prejudice.
He said students from Jammu and Kashmir should be able to pursue their education and careers anywhere in the country without fear or intimidation.
The JKSA said it has been pursuing cases involving alleged harassment of students from Jammu and Kashmir outside the Union Territory and also takes up issues concerning Indian students studying abroad.
