Patiala’s long-troubled Heritage Street is set to undergo a major makeover, with work on a new cemented road costing Rs 55 lakh beginning on Thursday following demands from local residents.
Patiala MLA Ajitpal Singh Kohli, Mayor Kundan Gogia and Municipal Commissioner Pooja Grewal jointly inaugurated the work. The existing tile surface, which local residents had complained was causing difficulties and posing safety concerns, will be removed and replaced with a cemented road.
Kohli said the project was being undertaken in response to the demands of residents and would provide a cleaner and more convenient passage for commuters.
He criticised the previous Congress government for installing what he described as unsuitable, stone-like tiles under the Heritage Street project and alleged that the work had caused inconvenience to residents for years.
Kohli said the replacement of the tiles and construction of a proper road was a commitment made to local residents and that the work had now commenced.
Mayor Gogia said there would be no compromise on the quality of development works being undertaken in the city. He said contractors and municipal officials had been directed to ensure that prescribed standards were maintained and that quality material was used.
Gogia added that strict action would be taken if any deficiency or substandard material was found during the execution of development projects.
The commencement of the Heritage Street redevelopment has been welcomed by residents, who have reportedly faced difficulties with the condition of the road for several years.
