Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Friday condemned remarks by Congress leaders describing former party MP Sajjan Kumar as a “role model”, alleging that the comments reflected what he termed the Congress’s “anti-Sikh mindset”.
Dhillon said the wounds of families affected by the 1984 anti-Sikh violence remained unhealed even 42 years after the killings. Against this backdrop, he described praise for Sajjan Kumar, whom he referred to as an accused in the 1984 violence, as particularly insensitive towards the victims and their families.
He said such remarks amounted to reopening painful memories for families who had suffered during the violence and were “a condemnable attempt to rub salt into their wounds”.
The Punjab BJP chief alleged that the Congress had repeatedly taken positions that hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community and said the latest remarks warranted an unequivocal response from the party.
Dhillon demanded that the Congress issue an immediate and unconditional apology to the families of those killed in the 1984 violence as well as the wider Sikh community.
He said statements made by Congress leaders praising or portraying figures associated with the 1984 violence in a favourable manner were unacceptable and called for the party to take responsibility for the remarks.
