Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has cancelled the US leg of his ongoing UK-US tour after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) denied permission for the visit, citing the absence of clearance “from political angle”, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said on Friday.
Reddy, who left for London late on Wednesday as part of a 10-day official visit, will now return to Hyderabad after completing his engagements in the UK. The TelanganaRising delegation was scheduled to travel to the US on August 23, with Boston among the planned destinations.
According to the CMO, the state government had sought the Centre’s permission for both the UK and US visits in accordance with the prescribed policy and protocol. While clearance was granted for the UK leg, permission for the US visit was denied after the delegation had already reached London.
Reddy said the US visit was intended primarily to explore partnerships with leading global educational institutions and bring international opportunities in education, skills and training to Telangana. He said the initiative was aligned with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy and aimed at expanding opportunities for young people.
“I have always believed we should all think beyond politics and elections when it comes to nation building and future of the youth,” Reddy said.
The Chief Minister said he was disappointed by the decision but would comply with it and return to India instead of proceeding to Boston. He has, however, directed officials accompanying the delegation to continue with the proposed US engagements and work towards finalising memoranda of understanding and partnership agreements.
Reddy said his government remained committed to making Hyderabad a global education and knowledge hub, pointing to institutions such as Osmania University, the University of Hyderabad, JNTU, IIT Hyderabad, ISB, IIIT and NALSAR as part of the city’s educational ecosystem.
His UK itinerary will continue as scheduled, including engagements with Oxford University, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, London Business School and the University of London. He is also expected to meet sports and skilling institutions in the UK to explore partnerships with Telangana.
Reddy said his broader objective was to bring world-class educational and skills institutions to Hyderabad so that Indian students could access globally recognised opportunities without having to travel abroad.
