Musician Adnan Sami remembered his late mother on her 79th birth anniversary, sharing an emotional note about missing her and revealing that her name and phone number remain saved on his device.
Sami took to Instagram and shared a series of photographs of his mother, who passed away in 2024. Reflecting on her absence, he said there are moments when memories of her still catch him off guard.
“Today is my mother’s birthday. I still miss her in ways that catch me off guard. Her laughter. Those odd, sharp observations she would make about life and about me — the kind that stayed with you long after she said them. There is a space she left that no one else can fill,” he wrote.
The singer also said that his daughter Medina continues to feel the loss.
Sami revealed that he has been unable to remove his mother’s contact details from his phone despite knowing that she will never call again.
“Even now, years later, her name and number are still saved in my phone. Still on my favourites. Still on speed dial. I know that name will never flash on my screen again. I know she is not there. And yet I cannot bring myself to delete it. I simply can’t,” he wrote.
He urged people whose mothers are still alive to cherish every opportunity to speak to them and appreciate their presence.
“To everyone who still sees their mother’s name light up on their phone — answer it. Be grateful for that privilege. One day that name will stop appearing, and it will never come back. Love your parents while you can,” Sami wrote.
He concluded the tribute by describing parental love as “unconditional” and “selfless” and wished his mother a happy birthday.
Sami performs Indian and Western music in several languages, including Hindi, Urdu, English, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. He was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to music.
Known particularly for his piano performances, Sami has been credited with bringing the santoor and elements of Indian classical music to the piano. Born and raised in the UK, he was previously a Canadian citizen before becoming an Indian citizen in 2016.
His popular songs include “Lift Karadey”, “Kabhi To Nazar Milao”, “Kabhi Nahi”, “Tera Chehra”, “Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein” and “Bhar Do Jholi Meri”.
