India’s premier distance runner Gulveer Singh scripted history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by clinching the bronze medal in the men’s 5000m, becoming the first Indian athlete to win two track and field medals at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games.
The 28-year-old clocked 13:24.95 in the 5000m final on Saturday, adding bronze to the silver medal he had won earlier in the men’s 10,000m with a time of 27:49.78.
Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang claimed the gold medal in 13:23.61, while Australia’s Ky Robinson secured silver in 13:24.70.
Gulveer produced a composed tactical performance throughout the race. Staying within the leading pack for most of the event, he launched a strong finishing sprint in the final lap, moving up from fifth place to secure the bronze medal.
The athlete from Atrauli in Uttar Pradesh began cautiously, remaining in eighth position after the opening lap before moving into contention during the middle stages. Although he slipped back around the halfway mark, Gulveer timed his final surge perfectly to finish on the podium.
An Armyman serving with The Grenadiers Regiment, Gulveer began his running career on village roads while preparing for military recruitment before joining the Indian Army in 2018. Since then, he has emerged as India’s leading long-distance runner.
A bronze medallist in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games, Gulveer enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025 by winning double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.
He also holds Indian national records in the 5000m, 10,000m, one mile and half marathon, and has achieved several landmark performances, including becoming the first Indian to run a sub-four-minute mile and the first to complete a half marathon in under 60 minutes.
