The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that 2,273 Indian nationals have been deported from the United States to India so far this year.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media briefing that the number of Indians deported from the US between January 1, 2026 and July 31, 2026 stood at 2,273. He added that 3,567 Indian nationals were deported from the US during 2025.
“We continue to work with several foreign governments on deportation issues. Whenever such cases are referred to us, we conduct due diligence to confirm the nationality of the person concerned,” Jaiswal said.
He explained that India facilitates the return of individuals only after verifying their Indian nationality through proper procedures.
The MEA said India has consistently opposed illegal migration while supporting safe and legal migration channels. The ministry reiterated that nationality verification remains an essential step before accepting any deported individual.
“When a person does not have legal status in another country and is referred to us with a claim of being an Indian national, we conduct background checks, confirm nationality and then facilitate their return,” the spokesperson said.
The issue comes amid stricter immigration measures in the United States, including changes affecting foreign workers and visa programmes.
The US administration has defended its recent measures on immigration, including changes related to the H-1B visa programme, saying they were aimed at addressing alleged misuse of the system.
