The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Friday said it had dismantled several underground tunnels beneath the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon, describing the network as a key Hezbollah command centre used to direct attacks against Israeli forces and civilians.
In a statement posted on X, the IDF said the underground complex had served as a strategic Hezbollah stronghold built over nearly two decades. According to the Israeli military, the tunnel network consisted of multiple underground levels and was used to coordinate fire against IDF personnel and Israeli civilians.
The IDF also released a video purportedly showing the tunnel system.
In a separate statement, the Israeli military said its troops recovered a cache of weapons from the Majdal Zoun area, including Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition, grenades, explosives, anti-tank missiles and mortar shells. It added that structures allegedly used by Hezbollah were also demolished during the operation.
Earlier this week, the IDF announced that it had dismantled another underground tunnel that it said functioned as a Hezbollah headquarters beneath a construction materials factory located about 300 metres from a United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) facility.
According to the Israeli military, the tunnel was approximately 55 metres long and contained three living quarters. Troops also discovered an underground shaft connected to the tunnel, where dozens of weapons were allegedly stored.
The IDF further said its forces recovered additional military equipment, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), explosive devices, grenades and ammunition, from the security zone. It also stated that soldiers fired at a suspect in the Ras Bayada area after he allegedly approached them in a manner perceived as a threat.
The developments come ahead of a fresh round of US-mediated talks between Israel and Lebanon scheduled to be held in Rome from August 4 to 6.
According to the US State Department, technical teams from both countries will discuss expanding a pilot security zone in southern Lebanon, resolving outstanding border disputes and advancing implementation of the framework agreement signed by the two sides last month. The talks are also expected to explore a broader peace and security arrangement between Israel and Lebanon.
