Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to legendary writer Munshi Premchand on his birth anniversary, describing him as a timeless literary figure whose works continue to inspire generations with their realism, human values and commitment to social equality.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Premchand’s writings gave powerful expression to human emotions and remain relevant even today. He also lauded the author’s contribution to bringing global recognition to the literary heritage of Kashi, where he was born and created many of his celebrated works.
“His immortal literature, rooted in realism and social equality, will forever remain a source of inspiration for the people of the country,” Modi said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also remembered Premchand, calling him the “Katha Samrat” (Emperor of Storytelling). He said the celebrated author vividly portrayed social inequalities, exploitation and human suffering while also capturing the innocence and emotions of children through his stories.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Premchand’s writings reflected the realities, struggles and aspirations of Indian society and continue to inspire people with the ideals of equality, social justice and human values.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid homage, saying Premchand gave a voice to the lives and struggles of those on the margins of society and that his literary legacy would continue to inspire social awareness, compassion and patriotism.
Born in 1880, Munshi Premchand is regarded as one of the greatest writers of modern Hindi and Urdu literature. Widely known as the “Upanyas Samrat” (Emperor of Novels), he authored over 300 short stories, 14 novels and several essays, with classics such as Godaan, Gaban, Nirmala, Karmabhoomi and Kafan continuing to occupy a prominent place in Indian literature.
