The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday launched a sharp attack on Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, accusing him of making baseless claims about AAP legislators to divert attention from what it described as infighting and a leadership crisis within the Congress.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, AAP Punjab Media In-Charge Baltej Pannu alleged that the Punjab Congress was preoccupied with internal rivalries rather than raising issues affecting the people of the state. He claimed that with the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, opposition parties were becoming politically unsettled.
Pannu dismissed Raja Warring’s reported assertion that 40 to 45 AAP MLAs were in contact with the Congress, calling it a fabricated claim intended to shift focus from the Congress’ internal challenges. Referring to earlier statements by senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who had claimed that several legislators were in touch with him, Pannu said the differing claims reflected confusion within the opposition party.
He remarked that if the figures cited by Congress leaders were taken at face value, the party would already have enough legislators to form a government, questioning why it had failed to do so. According to him, such contradictory statements exposed the Congress’ lack of internal coherence.
Pannu also questioned the Congress leadership over the departure of several prominent leaders to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He cited former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, former Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, former MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and Kewal Singh Dhillon as examples, alleging that the Congress had failed to prevent senior leaders from leaving the party. He said a party unable to retain its own leadership had little basis to speculate about legislators from other parties.
Targeting Raja Warring further, Pannu challenged the Congress to first identify candidates for all Assembly constituencies before making claims about forming the next government. He also alleged that the Congress was grappling with a leadership tussle, with several senior leaders aspiring to be projected as the party’s chief ministerial face.
Referring to reports about posters featuring senior Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi, Pannu claimed they reflected divisions within the party, alleging that they did not prominently display the Congress name, election symbol or central leadership.
Concluding his remarks, Pannu urged Raja Warring to focus on strengthening his own party instead of making what he termed “imaginary” claims about the AAP. He asserted that the Bhagwant Mann-led government continued to focus on governance and development, while expressing confidence that the people of Punjab would support the AAP again in the 2027 Assembly elections.
