A personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) was injured in an accidental firing incident during a patrol in Anantnag district on Friday, officials said.
The incident occurred in the Magam area of Kokernag when the policeman’s service weapon accidentally discharged during patrolling.
The injured personnel has been identified as Mohd Altaf Khan, son of Habibullah Khan. Officials said the bullet struck his foot.
He was initially taken to the Sub-District Hospital in Kokernag for first aid before being referred to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Anantnag for further treatment. His condition was not immediately disclosed.
Police officials said the incident was accidental, and no other personnel were injured.
The Special Operations Group (SOG), a specialised tactical wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, was established in 1994 to strengthen the force’s role in anti-militancy and counterterrorism operations in the Union Territory.
The unit is tasked with conducting anti-terror operations, counterinsurgency missions, hostage rescue, high-risk law enforcement assignments, special reconnaissance and security operations in sensitive areas. It also provides support during crisis situations and assists in maintaining security in regions vulnerable to terrorist threats.
Drawn from the ranks of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the SOG has played a key role in counterterrorism operations over the years and remains one of the frontline units engaged in anti-militancy efforts in the region.
