Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Friday urged the Canadian government to reconsider recent changes to its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) regulations, saying the revised rules have created uncertainty for hundreds of Indian students, many of them from Punjab.
In a statement, Jakhar said the affected students had secured admission to Canadian colleges and universities when different PGWP rules were in force. He said students and their families had invested significant time, effort and financial resources based on the policy that existed at the time of enrolment.
According to Jakhar, the sudden policy changes have left many students uncertain about their academic and career prospects, causing considerable mental stress.
While acknowledging Canada’s sovereign right to frame and revise its immigration and education policies, he said such changes should not adversely affect students who enrolled under the earlier regulations. He urged the Canadian authorities to consider suitable transitional arrangements or relief measures for those already pursuing their studies so that they are not unfairly disadvantaged.
Jakhar also appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take up the matter with the Canadian government through diplomatic channels and seek a solution that protects the legitimate interests of affected Indian students.
He said Indian students studying abroad represent an important part of the country’s human capital and that safeguarding their future is a shared responsibility. Expressing hope for an early resolution, Jakhar urged the Government of India to engage with Canadian authorities at the earliest and work towards securing relief for students impacted by the revised PGWP regulations.
