Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Friday welcomed the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to restore the name of Sant Ravidas Nagar for Bhadohi district and urged the Yogi Adityanath-led government to similarly reinstate the original names of other districts that were renamed by previous administrations.
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the state government for restoring the district’s original name, describing the move as a positive step.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently announced that Bhadohi district would once again be known as Sant Ravidas Nagar while addressing a public event in Varanasi, the birthplace of the revered saint Ravidas.
Referring to her tenure as Chief Minister, Mayawati said her government had created several new districts, tehsils, development blocks, police zones and ranges to strengthen the administrative system and improve governance. She said many of these administrative units were named after saints, social reformers and eminent personalities, particularly from Dalit and Other Backward Class (OBC) communities.
According to Mayawati, the subsequent Samajwadi Party government led by Akhilesh Yadav changed several of those names due to what she described as a “casteist mindset” and narrow political considerations.
She also referred to the district named after BSP founder Kanshi Ram in the Braj region, with Kasganj serving as its headquarters. Mayawati alleged that the Samajwadi Party government altered its name as part of what she termed an anti-PDA (Backward, Dalit and Minority) approach.
The BSP chief appealed to the current state government to restore the original name of the district established in honour of Kanshi Ram, preferably before or on October 9, the death anniversary of the BSP founder.
