Security forces have busted a suspected terror hideout in a dense forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district and recovered ration items and other materials believed to have been stored for use by militants, officials said on Friday.
The hideout was detected on Thursday evening during an area domination and search operation in the Bangai forest area of Thanamandi.
Officials said the hideout had been concealed deep inside thick vegetation in a heavily forested area, making it difficult to detect. It was located only after a detailed search of the area.
The recovered items included two packets of rice, instant noodles, a knife, a lighter, a plastic sheet, an old blanket, a gas stove nozzle, two candles and a plastic bottle.
Security forces have continued search operations in the surrounding areas, with further details awaited.
The latest recovery comes amid sustained operations by security forces against militant networks and their support infrastructure in Rajouri district.
In previous operations, security forces have unearthed several suspected hideouts in the district. In Chamrer Forest area of Thanamandi, a hideout containing a ready-to-use improvised explosive device (IED), clothing and food supplies was recovered.
Earlier, a joint operation in Darra Barachara led to the recovery of 10 under-barrel grenade launchers (UBGLs), a damaged ammunition box and medical supplies from an underground location.
Search operations in Gambhir Mughlan in May resulted in the recovery of automatic weapons, AK-47 rifles, pistols and explosive material allegedly concealed in natural caves and dense vegetation.
A hideout recovered in Sagrawat Forest of Darhal in August 2024 contained cooking gas, blankets and other daily-use items, while a search operation in Kalakote in 2023 had led to the recovery of weapons.
Security forces and the Army continue to maintain heightened alert along the International Border, Line of Control (LoC) and adjoining areas of Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, Kathua and Jammu to prevent militant infiltration and establishment of support networks.
Intelligence agencies have assessed that continued pressure through cordon and search operations could increase the likelihood of militants being detected while attempting to move or establish temporary bases in the region.
