India on Friday strongly criticised Pakistan over its reported crackdown on civilians in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), urging the international community to scrutinise Islamabad’s actions and hold it accountable for alleged human rights violations in the region.
Addressing the Ministry of External Affairs’ weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal alleged that Pakistani authorities had used excessive force against peaceful protesters in PoJK, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 people and injuries to many others.
Jaiswal said Pakistan’s attitude towards the people of PoJK was reflected in the remarks of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who reportedly described the protesters as “enemies”. He said the comments demonstrated what India termed the Pakistani establishment’s disregard for the region’s civilian population.
The MEA spokesperson also referred to remarks by Rana Sanaullah, Special Assistant to Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Political Affairs, alleging that they amounted to an admission that militant groups once supported by Pakistan had turned against the state.
He further claimed that the recent developments in PoJK reflected growing public discontent and said local groups had sought an independent international investigation into the reported killings.
“We urge the international community to scrutinise Pakistan’s actions and hold it accountable for its atrocities,” Jaiswal said.
The remarks come amid continuing protests led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in several parts of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. According to reports cited by India, demonstrations have taken place in areas including Rawalakot, Kotli and Mirpur, with allegations of the use of force by Pakistani security personnel against protesters.
India also referred to videos circulating on social media purportedly showing clashes during protests. The reported casualty figures and other claims made during the briefing have not been independently verified.
