Congress MP K.C. Venugopal on Friday moved a privilege motion against Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh, alleging that he misled the Lok Sabha by stating that no firing took place during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest.
The issue arose during the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the Centre over the alleged use of force against protesting students.
Announcing the move on X, Venugopal accused the minister of making a false statement in Parliament. He claimed that Rahul Gandhi had publicly met a student allegedly injured by pellet fire and asserted that media reports and hospital records documented injuries sustained during the protests.
“The Government cannot get away with such obvious falsehoods in Parliament. There should be action against the Minister,” Venugopal said.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the Congress leader said the privilege motion was based on Jitendra Singh’s statement that no firing had taken place during the protest.
He argued that visual evidence available in the public domain and the injuries highlighted by the Opposition contradicted the minister’s remarks, alleging that the House had been misled.
The development comes a day after BJP MP Anurag Thakur submitted a privilege notice against Rahul Gandhi over his remarks during the same Lok Sabha debate on the anti-paper leak legislation.
Thakur’s notice, moved under Rules 222 and 223 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, sought action against the Congress leader for alleged breach of privilege and contempt of the House.
