The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that 139 Indian nationals have so far been released from the Russian Army, while efforts are continuing for the release of around two dozen remaining Indians reportedly serving in the force.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a media briefing that the government has been regularly taking up the matter with Russian authorities for the early discharge of the remaining Indian nationals.
“We have been following up with the Russian side for the release of the remaining Indian nationals in the Russian army. So far, our efforts have led to the release of 139 Indian nationals; we continue to pursue the release of the remaining two dozen Indian nationals who are reportedly in the Russian army,” Jaiswal said.
The MEA also issued a fresh warning to Indian citizens against accepting risky overseas job offers made by fraudulent individuals and agencies.
“We would like to caution our people against job offers that are fraught with risk and made by unscrupulous individuals and agencies,” the spokesperson said.
The government had earlier stated that around 202 Indian nationals were believed to have been recruited into the Russian armed forces. Several of them were discharged following diplomatic efforts, while reports indicated that more than two dozen Indians had died and some remained missing.
In September 2025, the MEA had issued an advisory urging Indian citizens not to join the Russian Army amid reports that some Indians travelling to Russia were being pushed into combat roles in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The advisory came after reports that some Indians had allegedly been misled by agents with promises of construction-related employment in Russia but were later sent to conflict zones.
The government has maintained that it continues to engage with Russian authorities to ensure the release and safe return of all remaining Indian nationals involved in the matter.
